A colonoscope is a fiberoptic endoscope commonly used in clinical practice. It can be inserted retrograde down through the anus to examine the rectum, sigmoid colon, descending colon, transverse colon, ascending colon, and cecum, as well as a small section of the small intestine (ileocecal end) connected to the large intestine. It is possible to clearly detect intestinal lesions and also to treat some of them, such as direct microscopic removal of benign lesions such as colonic polyps, microscopic hemostasis of intestinal bleeding, and removal of foreign bodies in the colon.
